Three Figments (2008)
For two classical guitars
for Ana Berlin
The middle movement was composed for the Norfolk Chamber Music Festival's New Music for Guitar workshop, and premiered June 22nd, 2007 at the Norfolk Chamber Music Festival by guitarists Thomas Flippin and Christopher Mallett. The outer movements were written for Thomas Flippin and Chris Mallet, and the full work was premiered at Sprague Hall in New Haven, CT, in April 2008.
In Figments, written in dedication to my wife Ana, I've tried to create a varied interface between two guitars (her favorite instrument). Figures and fragments are sometimes exchanged between the two players in tenderly interweaving ways that blur the individuality of the two and create a unified outer texture. At times, the players engage in a more responsive antiphonal dialog, but always return to being inextricably intertwined. In performance, the players sit at opposite ends of the stage, to enhance the stereo effect of the relationships between the two.
